Makin' Groceries | Biloxi, Mississippi | CHP Meets Mississippi

September 8, 2020

As some of you know, because James has the Milk Soy Protein Intolerance, I can’t have dairy or soy while I am breastfeeding. When we moved to Mississippi, I was worried about not having anywhere to eat out that would accommodate my dietary restrictions, so you know I was pumped when I met Lauren Turner, the owner of a super cute plant-based café.

Makin’ Groceries is located inside the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi. They specialize in plant-based family meal prep, but also offer catering, culinary instruction, and daily lunch specials at the café. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lauren and talking about all things Makin’ Groceries so you guys could get to know the Mississippi Gulf Coast right alongside me.

‘Makin’ Groceries’ is a phrase Lauren and her mom learned shortly after moving to the South. What started out as meaning: making the food you brought home from the store, the phrase quickly became a term the two used for anything food related: shopping for groceries, prepping the food, cooking the meals. When Lauren decided she wanted to “make groceries” for a living, she knew the phrase was a perfect fit!

Makin’ Groceries started out as a question in 2018 when, as Lauren was meal prepping for another week of teaching, she turned to her husband and said, “Why can’t I just do this for a living?” That one sentence grew into a dream and later that year, Lauren quit teaching and became a kitchen manager for Eat Drink Love. There, her love for makin’ groceries only grew bigger and she began preparing and delivering meals to families out of her home. As the business grew she catered pop-up events along the coast and eventually landed in the café inside the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art

When I asked Lauren about why the café offers vegan and vegetarian meals she said, “While I’m no doctor and I think life is too short not to enjoy a hamburger, I believe everyone could benefit from more plant-based meals in their diet.” Everything at the café is made from scratch with as many local ingredients as they can get their hands on, and they don’t use any refined sugar in their meals. And let me tell ya, they taste GREAT, and Lauren’s twin boys think so, too! In fact, most of the family dinners on the menu came from the very staples that Lauren’s family loves.
