Our Story | The Secret Wedding | Here Come The Hansens
If you can imagine, getting secretly married to your first serious boyfriend is enough to keep you from sleeping the night before you're supposed to go to the courthouse! I laid awake almost the entire night wondering if we were doing the right thing.. Not if getting married was the right thing, I knew he was the one, but if doing it secretly was the right way to go about it. I wanted to celebrate with my loved ones and friends, heck, I wanted him to at least meet most of them before we got hitched! All of those thoughts melted away and once I finally drifted off, I slept like a baby and when I woke up, I could not have been more excited to get married to the love of my life!
The next day, I got up early, straightened my hair, threw on my dress and waited outside Nick's car. As he walked towards me I got butterflies and a big smile took over my face, he looked so cute in his too short khaki pants and red and blue button up. We got in the car and started making our way to the courthouse, but things felt a little weird. If I could choose one word to describe us on that day it would be nervous, if I could choose a second one, it'd be AWKWARD!
We filled out all our paperwork with nervous giggles and awkward shoulder bumps. We played games on our phones to fill the silence while we waited our turn. When the ceremony started we were holding hands way too tight and we got super sweaty and we spent a majority of the ceremony facing the officiant, not even looking at each other (that part probably had a lot to do with the officiant's crazy, incredibly thick accent)! Seriously, can you say awkward?? As we slid our rings on and said I do, excitement replaced the nerves, but we could not escape the awkward. Nick and I leaned in for our first kiss as Mr. and Mrs. and we both forgot to tilt our heads and squashed noses, HARD. We ended the ceremony with a little happy dance and one of my favorite parts, signing paperwork at the Mental Health desk because the marriage certificate clerk was on break.
Despite us being totally weird, it was one of the happiest days of my life, and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world! If I could change something though, it would be how terrible I am at keeping secrets!
